The month of November marks the end of the first trimester, which means report cards will be sent home soon. There are also a number of important meetings in November, including PTA, SSC, ELAC and, notably, the Title I Conference. I want to highlight a few of these:
PTA (Nov 16 at 7pm): Please join our monthly meetings and become an active member of our PTA. We currently have a small, but dynamic group of parents leading, planning, and executing a number of fundraising activities to benefit our school. This hard-working group of parents needs your help. I highly encourage you to join the team and help us organize and meet our fundraising goals. This is also a good opportunity to meet and network with other parents.
Title I Conference: The Title I Conference will take place Tuesday, November 14th at 5pm. This important conference will take place in the library. Parents will learn about how federal money is spent, about academic and attendance data and about how parents can participate in the education of their children. We will have refreshments.
School Site Council (SSC): The SSC meeting will take place Thursday, November 16th at 330pm over WebEx. At this meeting, we’ll be discussing the last pieces of the school plan and possibly even have an opportunity to vote on it.

Minimum Days, Parent Conferences and Report Card Distribution: Minimum Days have been scheduled for the entire week of November 13th to allow for parent conferences. Your teacher(s) will be communicating with you regarding signing up for the parent conference. Teachers will be staying until 7pm on Thursday, November 16th to allow time for our late working parents. You will receive a copy of your child’s report card, as well as a copy of the Parent Compact.

Good day, Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,
Another month has passed, and I hope you had a refreshing October Break! As we return and enter the holiday season, we have a few exciting things coming down the pipeline.
Social Emotional Learning
First, the Mindful Life Project has been pushing into classes weekly and pulling students for the Rise Up small groups. I am happy to report student and teacher feedback has been positive! Students are excited to have Coach Baia in their classes, and students participating in the Rise Up groups enjoy the additional time to practice their skills in a small group setting!
Additionally, the Mindful Life Project is happy to extend its mindfulness sessions to Oakley Elementary families as they start their Family Mindfulness Sessions. Family Mindfulness Sessions are a great way to reinforce the mindfulness lessons your child receives during their Mindful Life Lessons in class and an excellent opportunity to connect with the school community. Sessions will be held on Thursday, weekly, in the library from 3:10-3:30. We look forward to seeing you there!
School Activities
As social media continues to be an expanding part of our lives, Oakley Elementary is committed to preparing our students for safe engagement with the internet. Accordingly, in November, Oakley Elementary will host a cyber security parent training session and our upper-grade students will attend a cyber security assembly. See below under Safety for more information.
PAWS Store
We will open our PAWS store this month and would love to have parent volunteers help us run this monthly student store. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me, Kaylyn Lumsden, by calling or stopping by the Office.
Attendance
Friendly reminder: your child’s daily attendance is critical to their school's success. Attendance is a parent and student responsibility. Let your child know that you think school attendance is important. And make sure your actions model this mindset. To that end, when planning vacations, please keep our breaks in mind. Recognizing it can be hard to return from our breaks, creating a daily bedtime and wake-up routine can help your child adjust between holiday breaks as we transition between breaks.
Did you know our classes compete monthly for the highest percentage of perfect attendance? This month, Trax the Tiger is visiting Mr. Buckman and Mrs. Minder-Maldonado’s classes since they had the highest attendance rate for September! Perhaps next month, your student’s teacher will win! Make sure to come each day, so they have a chance!

Thank you Oakley families for your continued support of our PTA. Your participation and contributions truly make a difference, and allow our PTA to further fundraise and put together great events. Here is a brief note from our president:
Hello OES families! October went quickly after returning from fall break and our Spirit Gear Fundraiser was a success! Many families shared that they had placed orders for holiday gifts which was a great idea! As mentioned previously, we will do another fundraiser for Spirit Gear in the Spring so keep an eye out for details and dates in the future.
This month’s PTA meeting will be pushed up a week since the fourth Thursday will be the Thanksgiving holiday and families will be busy celebrating. We will be discussing the planning of Cookies and Cocoa with Santa and if you are able to assist in planning, please reach out to us.
There are many opportunities to be a part of the community and support our students. Maybe you like to decorate or are great at party planning. Or you can help with fundraising ideas and organizing them. We really need help in getting the word out and are looking for someone to manage communications - via social media, posters, etc. Please let us know if you are able to pitch in. As always, you do not need to commit to a position or any specific number of hours or events.

Library News:
Dear Tiger Families,
Our Book Fair was a big success! We passed our goal of selling 1,000 books, with 1,160 books sold. A big thank you to all those who shopped and supported our library, as well as a big thank you to those who volunteered and helped make the Book Fair great!
Other recent library highlights:
After weeks of practicing, kindergarteners are now checking out books from the library to keep in their classrooms and doing a fantastic job!
We celebrated Filipino American History Month and learned about the Philippines with a 1st - 3rd read-aloud Sari Sari Summers by Lynnor Bontigao.
Upper grades created their own stories about magic elevator buttons inspired by Lift by Minh Le.
Students are having fun during lunch recess building with LEGOs, solving puzzles, folding origami, and more.
Friendly reminder if your student has a book that gets damaged or if it has not been returned in weeks, you will receive a bill with the cost of the book. Payment is not enforced but is very appreciated because of libraries’ limited budgets. Payment can be made in cash or checks (made out to Oakley Elementary School) and delivered to the library, front office, or student’s teacher. Thank you so much!

Safety: Cyber security is a current issue that affects just about every family with a computer, smartphone, and internet access. Through several popular social media platforms, many of our students become victims of bullying, harassment, and threats. This is especially true at the middle and high school levels. However, our elementary students are not immune to these social media threats and can themselves become victims.
In association with the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office, our school is offering a cyber security workshop for parents scheduled for Tuesday, November 28 at 6pm in our multi-purpose room. This will be followed by a student assembly on November 30.
Just a quick reminder that the blacktop and hallways are for students and staff only. Parents may access the blacktop and hallways ONLY by wearing a volunteer badge while on duty or accompanied by a staff member. Parents visiting classrooms MUST sign in at the front office and wait for an administrator to escort and remain with them to the classroom. These visits have a limit of 1 hour. These are important safety measures, and we appreciate your cooperation.
COVID-19 Updates: I have no new updates for you. The guidelines remain the same, so we continue to ask that you monitor your child for symptoms and call the office if you have any questions. We still have COVID-19 tests in case you need to administer at home. You may contact the office and request a kit.

Aprendizaje socioemocional
Primero, Mindful Life Project ha estado ingresando a clases semanalmente y atrayendo estudiantes para los grupos pequeños de Rise Up. ¡Me complace informar que los comentarios de estudiantes y maestros han sido positivos! ¡Los estudiantes están emocionados de tener al entrenador Baia en sus clases, y los estudiantes que participan en los grupos Rise Up disfrutan del tiempo adicional para practicar sus habilidades en un grupo pequeño!

Queridas familias de tigres,
¡Nuestra Feria del Libro fue un gran éxito! Superamos nuestra meta de vender 1000 libros, con 1160 libros vendidos. ¡Muchas gracias a todos aquellos que compraron y apoyaron nuestra biblioteca, así como también muchas gracias a quienes se ofrecieron como voluntarios y ayudaron a que la Feria del Libro fuera grandiosa!
Otros aspectos destacados recientes de la biblioteca:
Después de semanas de práctica, los niños de kindergarten ahora están sacando libros de la biblioteca para guardarlos en sus aulas y ¡haciendo un trabajo fantástico!
Celebramos el Mes de la Historia Filipino Americana y aprendimos sobre Filipinas con la primera y tercera lectura en voz alta de Sari Sari Summers de Lynnor Bontigao.
Los grados superiores crearon sus propias historias sobre botones mágicos de ascensores inspirados en Lift de Minh Le.
Los estudiantes se divierten durante el recreo del almuerzo construyendo con LEGO, resolviendo rompecabezas, doblando origami y más.

Seguridad:
La seguridad cibernética es un problema actual que afecta a casi todas las familias que tienen una computadora, un teléfono inteligente y acceso a Internet. A través de varias plataformas populares de redes sociales, muchos de nuestros estudiantes se convierten en víctimas de intimidación, acoso y amenazas. Esto es especialmente cierto en los niveles de secundaria y preparatoria. Sin embargo, nuestros estudiantes de primaria no son inmunes a estas amenazas de las redes sociales y ellos mismos pueden convertirse en víctimas.
En asociación con la Oficina del Fiscal de Distrito de Contra Costa, nuestra escuela ofrece un taller de seguridad cibernética para padres programado para el martes 28 de noviembre a las 6 p. m. en nuestro salón de usos múltiples. A esto le seguirá una asamblea de estudiantes el 30 de noviembre.
Sólo un breve recordatorio de que el asfalto y los pasillos son solo para estudiantes y personal. Los padres pueden acceder al asfalto y a los pasillos SOLAMENTE usando una insignia de voluntario mientras están de servicio o acompañados por un miembro del personal. Los padres que visitan los salones DEBEN registrarse en la oficina principal y esperar a que un administrador los acompañe y permanezca con ellos al salón de clases. Estas visitas tienen un límite de 1 hora. Estas son medidas de seguridad importantes y apreciamos su cooperación.
Actualizaciones de COVID-19:
No tengo nuevas actualizaciones para ti. Las pautas siguen siendo las mismas, por lo que seguimos pidiéndole que controle a su hijo para detectar síntomas y llame al consultorio si tiene alguna pregunta. Aún contamos con pruebas de COVID-19 en caso de que necesites administrarlas en casa. Puede comunicarse con la oficina y solicitar un kit.
