As we head into the fall break, we hope you have a fun and restful time away from school. Classes resume Monday, October 16th.
I want to thank all those families that were able to attend last week’s Read To Grow event at O’Hara Park school. We had several of our families in attendance, including several of Oakley’s staff. Thank you for your participation and for making this a successful literacy event.

Hello Parents, Caregivers, and Guardians,
Over the past two months, it has been my privilege to work with the students and families of Oakley Elementary School. While I have met and spoken with some, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Kaylyn Lumsden, and I am the Assistant Principal. As the AP, I have enjoyed continuing and expanding our school's positive behavior interventions and supports, such as the PAWS program and the integration of the Mindful Life Program at our site. In addition, I am also responsible for supporting our students' attendance.
At Oakley Elementary School, our goal is to have your child attend school EVERY SINGLE DAY they are well enough. Nonetheless, please be advised that if your child has a fever, they must stay home.
Oakley Attendance Facts!
Did you know?
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September will miss nearly a month of school by the end of the year!
Poor attendance in early grades can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back. And, by 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school!
Your child’s class gets a unique Oakley Class PAWS every day, and every student is in attendance! Class PAWS can then be traded for whole-class prizes such as popcorn, slime parties, and extra recess!
Again, working with teachers, students, and parents has been my pleasure to support our students' social, emotional, and academic well-being. Keep tuned in each month for a quick little facts section that will help support your child and their class.

Thank you Oakley families for your continued support of our PTA. Your participation and contributions truly make a difference and allow our PTA to fundraise further and put together great events. Here is a brief note from our new president:
Hello OES families! My name is Amanda Paden and I will be serving as the PTA president this year. I have daughters in 4th and 5th and I’m excited to continue to help in any way that I can and I encourage you to as well. You do not need to commit to a position or any specific number of hours or events. We are always looking for additional support to help organize and pull off events and assist us in providing even more for the OES students and staff. We have been focused on getting Family Day planned since the start of the school year and we will now be planning ahead for our next big event in December, Cookies and Cocoa with Santa. We would love to see more parent volunteers who can help us get this wonderful event organized again this year!
When we return after Fall Break, starting Monday, October 16th, we will begin the Spirit Gear Fundraiser. The sales will go through October 30th and we are excited about the options including an additional rainbow tie dye in both youth and adult sizes and of course the staple t-shirts and hoodie all with the OES logo. We have had many requests to do an additional Spirit Gear Fundraiser in the Spring and will share the dates as soon as possible so you can plan ahead.

Library News:
It’s been busy here at the Oakley Elementary Library! Kindergarten has been doing a great job practicing using their shelf markers and learning library manners. Other grades have learned the layout of the library through a scavenger hunt, created their own book covers, and/or learned about fiction versus nonfiction. Preschool has been getting better and better at listening quietly on the carpet and joining in on songs or play. Another exciting event is the Scholastic Book Fair! Stay tuned to see if we reached our goal of selling 1,000 books.

Safety: In our continuing focus on safety, here are a few items for your attention:
When dropping off, please follow the car line to the gate of the basketball courts, where you can safely pick up your student. You may also park in the lot or on the street and walk up to the basketball court gate to pick up your child.
Do not park/drop off/pick up on the stripped areas. These are reserved for official care givers, buses and district and emergency vehicles.
The blacktop is for students and staff ONLY. We ask all parents to remain behind the yellow lines. If you need to go beyond the yellow lines, a staff member must accompany you.
ALL visitors must check in at the office and sign in. To visit a classroom, visitors must be accompanied by a staff member.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
COVID-19 Updates: We have an excess of COVID-19 tests available. As we go into the two-week fall break, we highly recommend that families pick up COVID-19 tests and test the students before returning to school if they are exhibiting symptoms. These symptoms to monitor include fever, runny nose, diarrhea and persistent cough. Please call the office if you have any questions.

¿Sabías?
• El ausentismo en el primer mes de clases puede predecir una asistencia deficiente durante todo el año escolar. ¡La mitad de los estudiantes que faltan de 2 a 4 días en septiembre perderán casi un mes de escuela al final del año!
• La mala asistencia en los primeros grados puede influir en que los niños lean con competencia al final del tercer grado o que se retrasen. Y, para el sexto grado, la ausencia crónica se convierte en un indicador importante de que un estudiante abandonará la escuela secundaria.

Noticias de la Biblioteca:
¡Ha estado ocupado aquí en la biblioteca de la primaria Oakley! Kindergarten ha estado haciendo un gran trabajo practicando el uso de marcadores de estantes y aprendiendo modales en la biblioteca. Otros grados aprendieron el diseño de la biblioteca a través de una búsqueda del tesoro, crearon sus propias portadas de libros y/o aprendieron sobre ficción y no ficción. El preescolar ha mejorado cada vez más en escuchar en silencio en la alfombra y participar en canciones o juegos. ¡Otro evento emocionante es la Feria del Libro Scholastic! Estén atentos para ver si alcanzamos nuestra meta de vender 1000 libros.

Seguridad: En nuestro continuo enfoque en la seguridad, aquí hay algunos elementos para su atención:
Al dejar a su estudiante, siga la línea de automóviles hasta la puerta de las canchas de baloncesto, donde podrá recoger a su estudiante de manera segura. También puede estacionarse en el estacionamiento o en la calle y caminar hasta la puerta de la cancha de baloncesto para recoger a su hijo.
No estacionar/dejar/recoger en las áreas despojadas. Estos están reservados para los cuidadores oficiales, los autobuses y los vehículos distritales y de emergencia.
El asfalto es SOLO para estudiantes y personal. Pedimos a todos los padres que permanezcan detrás de las líneas amarillas. Si necesita ir más allá de las líneas amarillas, un miembro del personal deberá acompañarle.
TODOS los visitantes deben registrarse en la oficina y registrarse. Para visitar un salón de clases, los visitantes deben estar acompañados por un miembro del personal.

Actualizaciones de COVID-19: Tenemos un exceso de pruebas de COVID-19 disponibles.
